Jean Cullinane
Painter Sonoma County
A native Californian, I grew up in Marin County and moved to Napa in the late 60’s. Drawing inspiration from sweeping western vistas, coastal tides, natural light and color, I create compositions that explore and express my deep love of the natural world.
At 50, with my children grown, I returned to school and earned a BA degree, with an emphasis on painting and a minor in Art History. I am foremost an oil painter, a glazer, who paints in stages. The process is time-consuming and takes skill. The first stage is finding proportion and harmony, sometimes moving from a nature-inspired composition into a purely abstracted design. Techniques of the Old Masters are used to create depth and glow in my paintings.
When not in the studio, I can be found in our garden. On a recent visit to Georgia O’Keefe’s home in New Mexico, I realized a shared passion with O’Keefe. Like O’Keefe, I admit my garden can be a major distraction from painting yet it is my most faithful muse.
